Ideal climate suitable for treatment of respiratory diseases Thanks to research and forestation, the Ministry of Health of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy pronounced Veli Lošinj and Mali Lošinj climate resorts in 1892, but some had recognized this years before. First of all, we should mention Dr. Schtötter and Dr. Clar who invited tourists to come to the island. Thanks to the island’s beneficial climate, Dr. Clar’s son managed to successfully recover on the island after staying there for only three weeks. Professor Ambroz Haračić was another very important, if not the most important person in development of Lošinj as a climate resort. In 1880, he started his meteorological studies of the climate on the island of Lošinj and this data stimulated all further initiatives in tourism. In addition to meteorological observations, Prof. Haračić carefully collected all kinds of plants up to 1120 different species. In addition, he was one of the initiators for the establishment of the Society for the Embellishment and Forestation of Lošinj that planted over 80,000 seedlings of aleppo pine and 500 seedlings of alley trees in the first year of its existence on the island, and over 300,000 seedlings were planted every year to follow. Thanks to the Society, the island of Lošinj is now covered with a green coat, especially the sunny parts, Sunčana uvala and Čikat where one of our largest camps, Camp Čikat, is located. The island of Lošinj has marine therapeutic factors including the quality of air and climate, sea water, sea peloid, algae, promenades, the vegetation, sand and salt peloid. Opened back in 1889 as a recovery facility for scrofulous and weak children, the Veli Lošinj Health Center for Respiratory and Skin Diseases and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation still operates and presently introduces a holistic approach to rehabilitation. Hypotherapy (horseback riding therapy) was introduced in 2010. Sea therapy uses the activity of the sea and littoral, making Lošinj an ideal place, also thanks to its 2500 sunny hours per year. Based on air quality measurements performed in 2008, the town of Lošinj is in the highest air quality category. You will truly take full breaths on Lošinj!
